Welcome!

Dear Emersonian,

Stefanos Sitaras I’ve just returned from Los Angeles where I attended the 8th Annual Festival of Film and Video and am pleased to report that the event was a stellar success. The Festival has become an extremely important event for our LA Alumni community and in concert with the celebration, President Jacqueline Liebergott made the special announcement that Emerson has purchased property in Hollywood at Sunset and Gower, with plans for a permanent home for the Los Angeles Center and program. Hollywood Mayor Eric Garcetti enthusiastically spoke of the importance of this partnership with Hollywood, and an industry where Emersonians are highly regarded as some of the best in the business.

I hope to see you at Alumni Weekend 2008 on May 30th, 31st and June 1st where you will be able to witness first-hand the significant work that has made Emerson one of the premier arts and communication schools in the country, and I urge you all to visit the Emerson Alumni website (www.alumni.emerson.edu) to check out other events in your region that will allow you to touch the excitement and energy of Emerson in your own backyards.

As always, please drop me or the Alumni Office a note to let us know how you are doing, or visit our Alumni website to register your most recent accomplishment in the Class Notes section. I look forward to seeing you at Alumni Weekend or an upcoming Alumni event in your community.

With warm regards,

Robert Friend ‘79
President, Emerson College Alumni Association

Freshman filmmaker has already been to Cannes

Stefanos Sitaras

Current freshman Stefanos Sitaras "has already conquered Cannes" began a recent feature on the "19-year-old filmmaking phenom" in the Boston Metro. The article describes what brought Sitaras to Emerson. "At 13, he left his homeland [of Greece] to attend the New York Film Academy in Paris. He traveled to France again at age 16 — this time to screen his short film, Hitherto, at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival," where the young filmmaker even met Martin Scorsese. Soon after he would make the journey to Boston to study at Emerson.

Hitherto is the second film in Sitaras' silent black-and-white trilogy, according to the Boston Metro, "[and focuses] on the life of a young beggar." All three of his films explore ideas of mortality, he said. "There's something about the theme of death that attracts me in film, and that's really ironic because I'm not a depressive person. It may be my suppressed fear of death manifests itself only in film because, if I love life so profoundly, then this must be some sort of twist of the unconscious."

His influences include Bergman, Fellini and Hitchcock. "I really tried to evoke that inner consciousness of the viewer that relates only to the visual," he explained.
